Grete Andrea Kvaal lives and work in Tromsø, North Norway.

Through her extensive artistic production, slowness in pace and the ample use of time is important. Kvaal`s artprojects often form thematic series spanning long periods of time. Most of her work consists of analog black and white pictures, although she also likes to explore alternative photographic techniques.

Artistic approach and technique depends on what she wants to express; her current project is digital and in colour. Kvaal prefers to assume the role of a possibly non-intrusive participating observer who directs and influences her objects only to a small extent. She interacts with people and nature, observing and facilitating, while trying to visualize what is not easily seen.

 

The theme of her work is often the experience of being, different forms of  life lived.  Important projects are  the book «Karen Anna and her Siida» (2001),  about women in reindeer husbandry, and the award-winning film «Towards the end of a journey» (2003) about her cousin`s death, based on black and white stills.

In addition to book, film, public art collections, her projects have been realized through multimedia, teaching and exhibitions - at home and abroad.

 

Kvaal`s current project  «The strange and marvelous life of the Germine flowers» highlights the flower's short life and amazing transformation.The mother plant gradually withers and decays, but it gives seed to the end.  In its quest toward the production of new seeds, unique forms are created by every single flower - the eternal circle of life, of which we human beings are also  a part.

 

Kvaal herself says about her art:

«I want my pictures to touch and lead to reflections, new knowledge and an expanding of perspective.»

Grete Andrea Kvaal bor og arbeider i Tromsø.

Gjennomgående i Kvaals omfattende kunstproduksjon er tid og langsomhet. Prosjektene, de fleste i serier, varer ofte over flere år. Hun har for det meste arbeidet analogt med sort-hvit bilder, men utforsker også alternative fototeknikker. Fotografisk teknikk velges ut fra hva hun vil uttrykke, og hennes nåværende prosjekt er digitalt og i farger. I arbeid med ulike tema er hun deltakende observatør,  og griper i liten grad inn og påvirker. Hun er i samspill med mennesker og natur, observerer og legger til rette, og løfter frem det man ikke så lett ser.

 

Tema er ofte menneskenes væren/levende liv. Viktige prosjekt er boken «Karen Anna og hennes Siida» (2001) om kvinner i reindriften, og den prisbelønte  stillbildefilmen «Dagbok fra en avskjed» (2003) om kusinens død. I tillegg til bok, film, innkjøp og offentlig utsmykninger, er hennes prosjekt formidlet ved multimedia, undervisning og utstillinger i inn- og utland.

Kvaals nåværende prosjekt «Germiniblomstens forunderlige liv» tar for seg  blomstens korte liv og forvandling, - morsplanten som gradvis visner og forfaller, men som gir frø helt til siste slutt. Nye former skapes av hver eneste blomst i sin utvikling mot nye frø. Den evige sirkelen, som også vi mennesker er en del av.

 

Selv sier hun om sin kunst:

«Jeg ønsker at mine bilder skal berøre og være til ettertanke, gi større kunnskap og utvide perspektivet.»
